Via d'Azeglio 5/A: why I chose this street

Via d'Azeglio 5/A: perché ho scelto questa strada

If I had to describe Gamberini Bag with an address, it would be Via d'Azeglio 5/A.

In 2015, when I was looking for a space for the first shop, I knew it had to be here: a few steps from Piazza Maggiore, in what people in Bologna call the drawing room.

A street with its own rhythm

Via d'Azeglio is pedestrian as far as Via Farini, and it's one of the few streets in the old town with almost no porticoes. You walk more slowly because nobody overtakes you in a car, and because people stop to talk in the middle of the road.

At number 15

At number 15, ten doors up, was Lucio Dalla's house. He lived there for his last eighteen years, until 2012 — three years before I opened. On the front door there is still the bell with a false name on it, which he used to throw off the curious.

Today that house is a museum and can be visited by appointment, through the foundation that carries his name. If you come and see me and you have an hour, it's fifty metres away.

Number 5/A

Number 5/A is a shop where you sit down. You touch the leather, you try the cameo on the bag, you change three or four before deciding: nobody is in a hurry, myself included.

If you pass through Bologna, come and see me.
